Autism Spectrum Assessments for
Children, Adolescents & Adults

Children Aged 0-13 Years

For a child/adolescent aged 0-13, a referral from a Paediatrician or a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist for an Autism (or Pervasive Developmental Disorder) Assessment under Medicare will make rebates available.

The referring paediatrician/psychiatrist coordinates the multidisciplinary ASD assessment. They determine what assessments have been completed to-date, conduct or request relevant medical or laboratory tests and specify what allied health (eg speech pathology, occupational therapy and/or psychology) assessments are still required for a reliable diagnosis or no diagnosis. They then write the referral under the relevant Medicare item(s).

Medicare rebates apply to the direct observation and/or assessment of the child/adolescent, aged 0-13 yrs. Rebates for up to 4 Autism Spectrum assessment items can be claimed.

We offer the following Autism Spectrum assessment services under Medicare:
  • initial consultation, with child/adolescent.
  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS)
  • language assessment: expressive, receptive, pragmatic and/or articulation
  • occupational therapy assessment: eg sensory profile and/or (fine/gross) motor coordination
  • feedback consultation, with child/adolescent.

Additional assessment services are also available as part of a comprehensive multidisciplinary Autism Spectrum assessment but not covered by Medicare*:
  • diagnostic parent interview (ADI-R or 3Di) to gather diagnostic information about developmental history and current function [parent(s) only]
  • developmental or cognitive assessment, depending on the child's/adolescent's language and cognitive abilities [child] to: (i) exclude or identify global developmental delay or intellectual disability (ii) specify cognitive profile including strengths and weaknesses
  • achievement test to identify specific learning difficulties/disorders (including reading/dyslexia, writing/dysgraphia and maths/dyscalculia)
  • multidisciplinary assessment report(s).

*Parent consultations, parent interviews, cognitive assessments, achievement tests and assessment reports are not subsidised by Medicare.
Adolescents Aged 13+ Years & Adults

Referral from a Paediatrician or Psychiatrist for an Autism Spectrum assessment is preferred. Medicare rebates do not apply.

We offer the following Autism Spectrum assessment services:
  • initial consultation
  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS)
  • diagnostic parent* interview (ADI-R or 3Di) to gather diagnostic information about developmental history and current function
  • assessment report(s)
  • feedback consultation(s).

We also offer these additional assessments that are not diagnostic of ASD but are helpful for the specifications of associated difficulties:
  • language assessment: expressive, receptive, pragmatic and/or articulation (up to the age of 24 years)
  • occupational therapy assessment: eg sensory profile and/or (fine/gross) motor coordination.
  • cognitive assessment: to eliminate intellectual disability and specify cognitive profile including strengths and weaknesses
  • achievement test to identify specific learning difficulties/disorders (including reading/dyslexia, writing/dysgraphia and maths/dyscalculia).
We are a private clinic with no direct government funding. Due to the low Medicare rebates, which were frozen for many years, we cannot and do not bulk-bill. Full payment for ASD assessments is required either in advance or at the end of the assessment or consultation.
Cognitive assessments and achievement tests require a 50% deposit at the time of booking and full payment on the day.
Reports require advance payment.
